The 10th International Book Fair in Podgorica: A Celebration of Reading Culture

The 10th anniversary of the International Book Fair in Podgorica will be held from October 2 to 6, 2024, at Independence Square. This highly anticipated event will highlight Montenegro’s vibrant literary scene and reinforce the importance of books in everyday life.

Opening Ceremony: Honoring Branko Cvejić

The fair will begin on October 2 at 5 p.m. with a special event—a book promotion for “With Cvej”, a biography of Yugoslav and Serbian actor Branko Cvejić, edited by Beka Vučo. This homage to a great actor will kick off the festivities, marking the start of a rich program filled with literary discussions and celebrations.

A Press Conference to Introduce the Fair

During a press conference held at the Modern Gallery, several important figures discussed the upcoming event. Among the speakers were Snežana Tomanović, Secretary for Culture of the Capital City; Vasko Raičević, Artistic Director of the Fair; Jelena Đurđić from the Secretariat for Culture; and Bojana Maraš, representing the fair’s general sponsor, M

.

“The City Breathes Books”: A Fair with a Mission

Jelena Đurđić highlighted that this year’s fair is organized under the motto “The city breathes books.” This statement encapsulates the idea that books are more than just vessels of knowledge; they are living entities that enrich and inspire the community, perfectly symbolized by their presence at Independence Square.

Diverse Programming and a New Festival-Like Atmosphere

This year’s fair promises over 40 programs and participation from 70 publishers. Snežana Tomanović explained that while the majority of the fair’s activities will be based in the main square, events will also be held across various cultural landmarks in Podgorica, including Kuslev’s House, the Summer Stage, and Njegošev Park. This shift sets the foundation for next year’s expansion into a broader literary festival.

Due to scheduling conflicts with sports events, the usual location at “Bemax Arena” will not host this year’s fair.

Bringing Literature to the Square: A Return to Tradition

Vasko Raičević emphasized the long-standing tradition of hosting fairs in city squares, harkening back to a time before modern exhibition halls were built. Podgorica, however, does not yet have such a venue, and the fair’s presence in the heart of the city underscores the need for a dedicated space for future cultural gatherings.

An International and Regional Literary Experience

This year’s fair will feature international writers from countries such as Italy, England, Wales, Austria, and Poland. Regional authors will also have a strong presence, with many Montenegrin writers who have published abroad showcasing their works. The Croatian Society of Writers will send several representatives, including Ivan Herceg, who will present the renowned magazine Poezija, a key publication in the regional poetry scene.

Special Guests and Exclusive Announcements

One of the highlights of the fair will be a visit from celebrated Italian author Lorenzo Marone, whose latest novel “The Blue Feather” has not yet been translated into any South Slavic language. The novel will be translated into Montenegrin by Tereza Albano, with 1,000 copies being printed for the event.

Additionally, the dramatic work “The Conspirators” by Igor Štiks and Vladimir Arsenijević will be performed on October 2 at Studio CNP, directed by Boris Liješević.

A Must-See Event for Book Lovers in Montenegro

The International Book Fair in Podgorica is more than just an exhibition—it is a celebration of Montenegro’s cultural identity and literary achievements. With its diverse programming, international guests, and a deep connection to the city’s vibrant cultural scene, this year’s fair promises to be a truly enriching experience for all who attend.
