Grmozur’s History

Turkish fortress

The Ottoman Empire initially built Grmozur as a fortress in the 19th century. It was inaugurated in 1843 and covers an area of about 430 square meters. The structure on Grmozur Island was built from broken stone and lime mortar. It featured two gates for entry, defended by towers, the remains of which can still be seen today. This infamous reputation is derived from the island’s distance from shore, which isolates prisoners, minimising their chances of escape. The prison functioned until 1902, and it never regained its status.
